Course Objective:

Teach students the basics of photography, Adobe Photoshop and the fundamentals of visual communications.

 

Supplies:

35mm camera (film or digital) with manual controls or a point and shoot. 

Bring it to class if you have any questions regarding your camera.

Assignments should be turned in on a flash drive.

 

Grading:

Assignments need to be completed on time, they will be accepted the following week but the grade will be lowered one letter. 

Assignments will NOT be accepted more than one week late.

Final grades will consist of 25% midterm – 50% assignments and class work – 25% final portfolio review.

 

Course Outline:

 

Week 1 – Introductions to the course and basic camera functions.

Assignment – shoot at least 25 photos and put them on a flash drive. 

Reading - chapter 1 “Camera”

 

Week 2 – Holiday NO CLASS

 

Week 3 - Fundamentals of visual communications and composition basics.

Assignment – shoot at least 25 photos and put them on a flash drive. 

Reading - chapter 5 “Composition”

 

Week 4 - Portraits, shooting people and personalities and understanding lighting.

Assignment – shoot at least 25 photos and put them on a flash drive. 

Reading - chapter 4 “Light”

 

Week 5 – Use of color and intro to Photoshop

Assignment – shoot at least 25 photos and put them on a flash drive. 

Reading - chapter 2 “the Digital Darkroom”

 

Week 6 – Graphic Elements and Photoshop basics

Assignment – shoot at least 25 photos and put them on a flash drive. 

Reading – 3 “Photography and the World Wide Web”

 

Week 7 –Technical qualities and color correcting in Photoshop.

Assignment – shoot at least 25 photos and put them on a flash drive. 

Reading - chapter 6 “the Photojournalist”

 

Week 8 – Mid-term exam and photo illustrations.

Assignment – begin working on a photo illustration.

 

Week 9 – Spring Break

 

Week 10 – Work on photo illustrations in Photoshop.

Assignment – none

 

Week 11 - Photo stories and in-depth projects.

Assignment – begin working on a photo story or project.

Reading - chapter 7 “Documentary Photojournalism”

 

Week 12 – Future of photography.

Assignment – continue working on photo story or project.

 

Week 13 – What is a portfolio and how to put one together?

Assignment – continue working on photo story or project.

 

Week 14 – Open lab to work on photo story or portfolio.

Assignment – continue working on photo story or project.

 

Week 15 – Open lab to work on photo story or portfolio.

Assignment – continue working on photo story or project.

 

Week 16 – Photo stories are due.
