Textbook:
Visual Communications in a Digital Age (An Introduction to Photography and Photoshop)
by Ellie Bogue, Cathie Rowand, Aaron Suozzi and Worth Weller
Course Objective:
Teach students the basics of photography, Adobe Photoshop and the fundamentals of visual communications.
Supplies:
Film or digital camera (SLR or point and shoot)
2 flash drives
Grading:
Assignments need to be completed on time, they will be accepted the following week but the grade will be lowered one letter. Assignments turned in on time can be redone for a better grade.
Final grades will consist of 25% midterm – 50% assignments and class work – 25% final portfolio.
Assignments should be turned in on a flash drive.
Course Outline:
January 11 – Introductions to the course and basic camera functions.
Assignment – shoot 24 - 36 pictures.
Reading - chapter 1 “Camera”
January 18 – Holiday NO CLASS
Reading – chapter 2 “Lens”
January 24 - Fundamentals of visual communications and composition basics.
Assignment – shoot 24 - 36 pictures.
Reading - chapter 3 “Film”
February 1 - Portraits, shooting people and personalities and understanding lighting.
Assignment – shoot a portrait.
Reading - chapter 7 “Lighting”
February 8 – News photos, both spot news and general news and intro to Photoshop
Assignment – shoot a photo and focus on color.
Reading - chapter 4 “Exposure”
February 15 – Feature photos and Photoshop basics.
Assignment – shoot a photo and focus on geometric patterns.
Reading - chapter 8 “Special Techniques”
February 22 – Sports photos and color correcting in Photoshop.
Assignment – shoot a photo and focus on technical qualities.
Reading - chapter 9 “Seeing Like a Camera”
March 1 – Mid-term exam and photo illustrations.
Assignment – begin working on a photo illustration.
March 8 – Spring Break
March 15 – Work on photo illustrations in Photoshop.
Assignment – none
March 22 - Photo stories and in-depth projects.
Assignment – begin working on a photo story or project.
March 29 – Future of photography.
Assignment – continue working on photo story or project.
April 5 – What is a portfolio and how to put one together?
Assignment – continue working on photo story or project.
April 12 – Open lab to work on photo story or portfolio.
Assignment – continue working on photo story or project.
April 19 – Open lab to work on photo story or portfolio.
Assignment – continue working on photo story or project.
April 26 – Photo stories are due.
May 3 – Portfolios are due (assignments are not accepted after this date).
